On 9th July 2015 we announced the constitution of the MENCÍA Foundation in an event organized at the Circulo Ecuestre in Barcelona. First there was a talk given by the different doctors and scientists outlining the current situation of science in Spain and the importance of research if we are to progress. Afterwards there was a cocktail party for the guests on the rooftop terrace of the Círculo Ecuestre’s emblematic building.
The event was presided over by Mr Borja García-Nieto, president of the Círculo Ecuestre. The first talk was given by Dr Jaume Campistol, Head of Neuropediatrics at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital. He was followed by the other speakers: Dr Julio Montoya, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Zaragoza; Dr Josep María Campistrol, Head Doctor at the Hospital Clínic; Dr Jordi Barquinero, leader of the Cell and Gene Therapy group at the Vall d’Hebrón Hospital and Dr Angels García-Cazorla, Neuropediatrician at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital.
The future president of the Foundation, Ms Isabel Lavín, explained the reasons that had led to her undertaking this project together with her husband, Mr Valero Soler. She also gave the names of the members of the Board: Mr Borja García-Nieto; the lawyer, Mr José María Michavila; the priest, Father Javier Siegrist Ridruejo and the entrepreneur Mr José Carlos Rodríguez San Pedro.
The event was attended by numerous friends of the members of the Board including Ms Fabiola Martínez, vice president of the the Bertín Osborne Foundation, the TV presenter Ms Elsa Anka, the singer Gisela and the journalist-presenter Manel Fuentes, who used his wonderful sense of humor to promote a raffle with various prizes specially provided by different shops in Barcelona.
